It was established in 2013 as a spin-off from Siemens, but its roots date back to 1993. Description

In the context of ever-increasing demands on the quality parameters of the transportation system and the need to reduce its externalities, current technological capabilities based on AI and machine learning are able to more effectively harness the potential of data sets generated by sensor infrastructure that captures traffic characteristics in real time. Real-time data on the presence, direction, and speed of traffic flow objects within the road infrastructure enable the use of available communication interfaces for adaptive traffic organization and control, with the aim of achieving optimization and reducing the level of externalities. The variability in the design of sensor devices and systems significantly affects the usability of the collected data in environments involving advanced algorithms, AI, IoT, and machine learning models, thereby creating barriers to fully realizing the potential for fulfilling one of the priority areas of RIS 3, which focuses on smart mobility and transportation systems. In the case of sensor-based ICT, their effectiveness depends on their application in solving transportation engineering or optimization tasks in the transportation sector.

Goal

One of the key project objectives of the conceptual framework is to test a prototype of ICT technology capable of collecting traffic data with the required level of quality and granularity for use in advanced, high-value-added data systems. Interdisciplinary cooperation among project team members is taking place to define the requirements and parameters for creating a prototype, for which the testing phase can begin first in a laboratory setting and subsequently under real-world traffic conditions. Findings from the testing are promptly incorporated into modifications of the prototype until the target metrics of the testing process are achieved.

Project Results

The research process will result in a functional prototype of a sensory ICT system that meets the requirements and standards for implementing pilot projects in line with the Smart City and Smart Industry concepts. Research into the potential use of sensor devices as functional components of more complex technological systems provides a suitable framework for presenting the project’s outputs in the context of its long-term sustainability, with a clearly defined goal of ensuring high-quality inputs into the existing transportation engineering data architecture.
